Your complete guide to preparing your child for the classroom

Fall is just around the corner, and this can only mean one thing: it’s almost time to send your child to school.

While exciting, starting the school year can also be a stressful time for both children and parents—from readjusting routines to worrying about new classes and teachers. Here at Lingokids, we want to make that shift as stress-free as possible.

Our team compiled some top tips for making the summer-to-school transition a piece of cake.

Adjust routines early

Summer routines are much more flexible—especially when it comes to bedtime. To get your children ready for the school year, adjust gradually.

Starting to readjust routines 2 to 3 weeks before classes begin will give your children the time they need to adapt and be fully prepared for their first day back.

Reflect on the good times

Children do a lot of fun activities during summer. They take trips, spend days by the swimming pool, visit amusement parks, and make new friends.

Take some time to reflect on all of the good moments—have your children look at photos, write about new experiences, and tell stories! Appreciating the good memories from summer can help children to end the season on a positive note and reduce the nervousness that they experience at the start of the school year.

Propose new goals and objectives

The beginning of the school year is a great time to propose new goals. Set fresh objectives like new after-school activities or higher grades in their favorite classes. New goals will give your children the refreshed sense of motivation they need for a successful year.

Go shopping for school supplies together

Bring your children with you when go shopping for new materials! Getting to use cool new pens and fun notebooks are part of what makes children excited about starting the school year. Take advantage of this and let your child pick out their new supplies.

Reinforce positive aspects of school

Children naturally dread the end of summer. Long warm days, sleeping in, and afternoons at the pool all come to an end. Focus on the bright side by reinforcing all of the exciting aspects of the school year: getting older, learning more interesting things, starting a favorite sport again, and making new friends! Framing school in a positive light gets children excited for the first day.

Start practicing early

In the weeks leading up to the first day, get your child thinking and learning! The Lingokids app gives children the confidence they need to start strong. By practicing the basics, like traceables for ABCs and 123s, your child will walk into the classroom ready to learn new material.

Summer must come to an end, but it doesn't have to be a painful transition. Check out our blog for more tips on ensuring your children's educational success!
