Tips for preparing the best baby puree

Alimentation for babies, for at least their first six months, should be based exclusively around breast milk. However, it is from that age that a babies digestive system is ready for different types of nourishment. Especially foods that include fruits, vegetables, and cereals.

The problem is though that they don’t have their teeth yet, so these foods must be consumed as purees. These are healthy foods, put into a blender, that will progressively supply a baby with all of the micro and macronutrients that they need.

What are the different types of purees and how are they made?

There are many different types of purees for babies but generally, there are three different types: cereal purees, vegetable purees, and fruit purees.

Cereal purees for babies

You can use different types of cereals for making purees. The best idea is to use a mix from a formula as the basic elements of the puree. This is mainly so that you can be sure that the puree will contain all of the necessary nutrients that they require. It is worth pointing out though that you should try to choose a mix that is added sugar and gluten-free.

However, you do need to add another element to these purees, milk, which can make all the difference as far as quality is concerned. Without any doubt, breast milk is the perfect complement for this type of puree.

To prepare the puree, follow these steps to make a texture that is pleasant on the tongue as well as an attractive taste.

- Pour into a bowl the amount of milk that is recommended by the manufacturer. Then progressively add the number of cereals that is indicated by the manufacturer.

- Stir the mix until you get the desired texture. As the consistency of breast milk can vary, the amount of time you will need to stir the puree will also vary.

There is no need to worry if you need to add more than the recommended amount of breast milk to find the right texture as babies will be used to digesting this.

Vegetable purees for babies

If cereals are important for babies, then vegetables are even more important. This is because vegetables provide large amounts of nutrients, such as fiber, that is vital to a babies development. For this puree, different to the previous puree, it is recommendable to use fresh products. It is true that certain companies have been able to improve their formulas but fresh products are still the most recommended.

Once you know this, making these purees is very simple. Remember though, not all vegetables can be tolerated by babies straight away. It is advisable to start off with vegetables that are easy to digest, like potatoes, carrots, and pumpkins. There will be plenty of time to add new ones as they get older.

- Blend the vegetables sufficiently for a mix that is around 200g (this weight can vary depending on the babies age and dietary needs).

- Add breast milk or water to the mix.

- Continue to add breast milk or water until you get the right texture.

As a suggestion, try to avoid leaving any vegetable threads or strands as they can be unpleasant for babies to swallow and can cause them to lose their appetites.

Fruit purees for babies

If there is a puree for babies that stands out, it’s fruit purees. The combination of a fresh and sweet taste will be delicious for most babies. The best thing about these purees is that you will always have them available as they can be made almost anywhere.

As with the vegetable purees, you should begin with fruits that are easier to digest such as apples, pears, and oranges.

- Blend the required amount of fruit so that you have around 200g of puree.

- Make sure that the fruit is blended and crushed up uniformly.

- Add water to the puree until you have the desired texture.

As an idea, you can add a gluten-free biscuit with no added sugars. These small additions can sometimes help babies to be more receptive to new tastes and textures. At this age, the most important thing is to find ways of making sure that your baby receives the right amount of nutrients.
